Light in the Dark – flattening the seasonality curve in coastal nature-based tourism around the Baltic Sea
The Light in the Dark project brings tourism entrepreneurs and destinations from the coastal areas of five countries around the Baltic Sea together to tackle seasonality. A common concept has been developed to highlight the area for European markets. A series of experience categories elaborates on the uniqueness of the area that lacks dazzling highlights but capitalises on the region’s quietness and authentic offerings. The presentation is based on a study of almost 300 tourism SMEs from five countries and market research of 5000 respondents from 9 European and regional markets and will answer the following questions. What are the significant markets and key selling factors for nature-based tourism in the coastal areas of the Baltic Sea Region? What do tourism SMEs see as the biggest challenges and most ripe opportunities? What are the key factors that make off-season tourism viable and how can public authorities support their regional tourism ecosystem? Lapland is now well known as a destination, but can the Baltic Sea Region be the next Mediterranean?
